Welcome to the awe-inspiringly beautiful Greek Isle of Santorini. With one of the most dramatic and breath-taking entrances to any location, Santorini leaves a lasting impression from the moment you step on the island. White sugar cube houses and blue-domed churches perched on the high cliffs of the volcanic caldera (crater), dazzle the eye.
If you arrive by ferry, the port of Santorini is located 900 feet below the main town of Fira. Depending on your fitness level and amount of luggage, you can climb the 587 steps up, or hitch a traditional donkey ride into town. For the less adventurous, cable cars, although less picturesque, are also available — but do you really want to forgo the traditional donkey ride?
While In Santorini, explore Akrotiri (aka “Greek Pompeii”), an absolute must see – a Minoan town perfectly preserved after a volcanic eruption in 1650 BC. Of course, you must take some time to lounge on the picture-perfect volcanic beaches, complete with stunning red, gray and black sand providing a remarkable contrast against the azure blue sea. And make sure to try delicious mezedes (appetizers) and licorice-flavored ouzo in Oia, where you will have an unobstructed view of the sun dipping below the horizon. A show which only nature could provide.
