Known as “The Garden Island” among the Hawaiian chain, Kauai must have been named after the Garden of Eden. This tropical paradise will stun you with its ethereal beauty and make you want to stay forever. If natural wonders, a laid-back vibe, top-notch cuisine and beautiful beaches sound like the makings of your perfect vacation, look no further than Kauai.
Among the sights to see here, towering skyscraper resorts aren’t one of them because of strict policy against ruining the island’s natural beauty. The island is covered with lush rainforests, a striking canyon, sheer cliffs, and of course, fabulous beaches. To begin your exploration of Kauai, we recommend going for a hike. Choose an easy trail like Mahaulepu Coastal Trail that leads you to an isolated beach that may be harboring sea turtles or seals. For more intrepid adventurers, the Hanakapiai Trail leads you up a steep hillside to reveal sweeping views of the dramatic Na Pali coastline. Exploring the physical attributes of the island allows you to connect to the history of Hawaii and the tradition of its people. Waimea Canyon is another place to admire the landscape and ponder the ancient geological forces that created this 10-mile long and 3,567 foot deep chasm that is painted in swaths of gold, green, and red. Even if you stayed for weeks, there is no way you could exhaust the vast offerings of natural wonders on Kauai.
Dining is always one of the best parts of a vacation since it allows you a glimpse at daily local life. Kauai is no different and whether you choose traditional dishes or a gourmet spin on Pacific Asian cuisine, we can promise that you’ll eat well. As with any island destination, you can expect excellent seafood options at many restaurants. If you’re itching to eat like a local, favorites include Saimin, a ramen-esque noodle dish that was an old plantation standby, along with Kulolo, a dessert made of taro and coconut. Small coffee farms offer fresh roasted beans to start your mornings off right (don’t forget to take some home!) and locally brewed beer is a refreshing addition to a hot afternoon.
The beaches of Kauai are another spectacular highlight that will leave you breathless. With many to choose from, there is a beach for everyone on this island. If you dream of a lazy day in the sand, look no further than Tunnels Beach on the north shore. Tunnels features a reef near shore which is a haven for snorkelers and divers as the water depth is quite deep. Near the shore, the water is often calm and perfect for families. What if you want to try out surfing or stand-up paddle boarding? Hanalei Bay is one of the most picturesque beaches in the world and offers a variety of options. Calm waters in the summer are ideal for paddle boards, and the rest of the year the waves are just right for surfing. And if you’re traveling with a group and want a little bit of everything, Poipu Beach has been lauded as one of the best beaches in the world. It is divided by a sand bar that creates very calm waters on the west while the water on the east side is more active and excellent for boogie boarding, surfing, and more. We dare you to try out a few and determine which beach you belong to!
Unbelievable scenery, gorgeous beaches, friendly locals and endless outdoor adventure awaits you in Kauai.
