Location:
Villajoyosa is a traditional Spanish town on the Costa Blanca, located a short distance from Benidorm but less known as a tourist destination. The town is recognizable by its colourful houses that face the long, wide beach, offering a contrast to the 3 km of clean white sands in front of them.
The vibrant decoration of these houses was originally intended to help guide fishers home, as what is now a relatively large town was once a small fishing village. Fishing remains a central part of life in Villajoyosa today.
The mild climate makes Villajoyosa a pleasant place to stay year-round, and its position between the sea and the mountains provides some stunning scenic views.
The Old Town is perfect for exploring, with landmarks including a 16th-century watchtower and Roman bridges. The daily fish market is also an excellent opportunity to sample the local catch. To learn more about the town’s history, visit the Vilamuseu, a small but fascinating museum in the heart of the city. The town’s most famous attraction is its chocolate museum, which celebrates the presence of the Valor chocolate factory, one of Spain’s most famous chocolate brands.
Villajoyosa offers plenty of outdoor activities, with a local diving centre and tennis club. The town’s location on the tram line from Alicante to Dénia also makes it easy to explore the surrounding areas.
Although nearby Benidorm has grown into a popular resort, it started as a small fishing village until the 1960s. Today, Benidorm is home to several attractions, including water parks like Aqualandia and Terra Mitica.
Further south, Alicante is a beautiful city with parks, plazas, and beaches. A boat trip to the nearby island of Tabarca is a great way to discover the unspoiled beauty of the area.
