Villajoyosa is a traditional Spanish town on the Costa Blanca, a short distance from Benidorm but lesser-known as a tourist destination. It is recognizable by the many colourful houses facing the long, wide beach, contrasting with the clean white sands in front of them.
The town’s vibrant colours were originally used to help guide fishers home, as what is now a relatively large town was once a small fishing village. The climate in Villajoyosa is mild year-round, and its position between the sea and mountains offers picturesque views. The Old Town is particularly charming, with landmarks like the 16th-century watchtower and Roman bridges. The daily fish market is a must-visit, offering a chance to sample the local catch. The town also offers a local diving centre and tennis club, and its location on the tram line running from Alicante to Dénia makes exploring the surrounding area convenient.
Villajoyosa is also home to the Valor Chocolate Museum, as the famous Spanish chocolate brand is based in the town. Further south, Alicante is a rewarding city with attractive parks, plazas, and beaches, and a boat trip to the nearby unspoiled island of Tabarca is a great way to explore the region.
