Passports, Visas and Consideration for Minors

A passport is required for all travelers, including infants and children. Return tickets are required for all travelers. Be prepared to pay $16 per person for departure tax (to be paid in cash at Customs). No visa is required for Eastern Caribbean or North and South American citizens. No vaccinations are required.

In the case of minors, when traveling with your children, but without your spouse or partner, please have a notarized letter from the non-present parent authorizing the child’s travel. If not, the child may be held at security and unable to travel. This letter is highly recommended for any international destination (airlines include Hawaii in this case), and suggested for travel within the continental United States.

General Weather Conditions

On land or in the water, the Canouan climate is always amazing. No more than five degrees ever separates the air temperature from the ocean temperature, creating a perfect climate for every activity. The driest season is December to May. The rainy season is July to October. The coolest months occur between November and February. From August through October there is always a danger of a hurricane bearing down on the island. The hurricane tracks are usually far from Canouan but it is best to be always observant of local warnings.

Currency

Canouan uses the local Eastern Caribbean Dollar. Banks on the island provide exchange services for all major foreign currencies, cash or travelers checks. There is one ATM machine on the island.

Time Zone

Canouan Island is in the Atlantic Standard Time zone, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time and four hours behind Greenwich Mean Time.

Voltage

110 and 220 volts (British outlets). Adapters and converters are provided in the home.

Tipping Guide

The government tax of seven percent is added to all restaurant bills. Resort restaurants already include 10 to 15 percent.

• Baggage Porters: $1 to $5, or more if the service was particularly friendly and helpful
• Cloakroom Attendants in Nightclubs, et al: $1 to $2
• Bars and Lounges: $1 to $2 per drink
• Spa Treatments: 20 percent, or gratuity may be included in your final bill
• Tours and Tour Guides: 15 to 20 percent, at your discretion, based upon your experience
• Golf Club Cleaning: $3 to $5 per bag
• Fishing Guide: $60 to $100 for a full day
• In Home Chef: 20 percent
• Housekeeping: Your housekeeper may be tipped at your discretion, based upon your experience. A general guideline is:
  • $12 to $25 for a three to four bedroom apartment or home
  • $14 to $30 per night for a five to six bedroom home
• Destination Host: Your Destination Host may be tipped at your discretion, based upon your experience. For exemplary service we find guests generally tip from $20 to $50 per day.

Traveling with Prescription Medicine

If you are traveling with prescription medicines, carry them in their original containers and bring a copy of your prescription. If you buy medications abroad, be aware that they may not be FDA-approved or allowed into the United States.
