While other areas of France are better known and attract more tourists, St. Paul de Vence is a hidden gem. Also known simply as Vence, the little town is still a convenient distance to the coast and all that the beach life along the Cote d’Azur has to offer, but if you’re like me and tire easily of the traffic and crowds, Vence is the perfect getaway. What we may lack in hustle and bustle, we make up for with stunning views, authentic artist culture, and a truly relaxing and calming vacation.
There are a few “must-see” spots in Vence , the foremost being the Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence or the Matisse Chapel as it is more commonly called. Whether or not religion, art, or architecture interest you, a visit to this small chapel will enchant you. The story of how Matisse came to design, build, and create the chapel and the murals and stained glass windows is one of love and dedication, both on the part of Matisse and the young nurse (later a nun at the nearby convent) who was the artist’s muse. Knowing the heart of the story is almost as breathtaking as the the shades of blue, yellow and green that make up the striking stained glass windows. This is not your typical chapel!
Living among artists and their great works is inspiring and you will feel in the thrall of it as you walk around town. Many famous artists and writers have lived in this charming town and the culture of creating is still thriving here. I would love to let you in on my favorite secret spots to chat with local artists, or share with you where the best art galleries are if you’d like to take a piece of Vence home with you. There are frequent outdoor exhibitions and plenty of opportunities to enrich yourself with the artistic culture Vence is known for.
This is a magical town… welcome to St. Paul de Vence with Time & Place!
