Feel like an emperor in majestic Villa Des Indes I and lose yourself in the nooks and crannies of this elaborate haven. Focused on an intricate carved teakwood ‘juglo’ roof – a traditional Javanese house design feature of noble families – this villa will have you truly spellbound. It’s made up of separate vernacular living pavilions that connect via a path that winds around the glorious pool and tropical garden.
The villa is centuries old with colonial furniture and ancient heirlooms in every room, accented with oriental rugs and original artwork. Enter through the exquisitely carved doorway to discover the sheer detail from floor to ceiling. From wooden latticework to vines that wrap around extravagantly decorated pillars and filigree carvings in the bathroom, you’re bound to be awestruck!
Made almost exclusively from wood, traditional Indonesian houses are designed to harmonize with the environment and are made using natural materials. Orange and red soft furnishings complement the teakwood perfectly.
There’s a choice of three separate seating areas indoors and outdoors. Gather for breakfast in the kitchen surrounded by Indonesian art installations or enjoy the breezy lifestyle and relax on cozy armchairs on the deep verandas. For those who forgot their reading material, the multi-functional den/library/study is stocked with literature, and every bedroom has satellite TV.
The bedrooms are devastatingly beautiful and extremely spacious – the master bedrooms have attached living spaces with sofas. You might struggle to tear yourself away! Sink into four-poster beds with luxury cotton bedding and drapes. Before you go to sleep, admire the colorful carved screens and patterned textiles.
Guest bedrooms have queen size beds on the lower floor and two twin beds in the upper. While the villa generally sleeps eight people, the seating in the alcove can also be converted into an additional bedroom. Each bedroom has a marble bathroom and a choice of a walk-in or alfresco shower in a courtyard.
Outside, you’ll find a traditional cushioned balé where you can soak up the Balinese sunshine and feel like royalty. The azure lagoon pool curves through the garden, with sunken seating that encircles an island of fragrant frangipanis and borders a manicured lawn.
The professional staff are extremely knowledgeable and experienced – lots of them have been working here for many years and can provide sage advice about what to see and do on the island. At night, the villa is illuminated and is reflected in the pool – Villa Kabul really is a mesmerizing place to spend a relaxing holiday.

Location:
You’ll find Des Indes I in the exclusive enclave of the Laksmana estate, a gated community in the heart of glamorous Seminyak. However, we wouldn’t blame if you never left the comfort of the villa! If you do manage to tear yourself away, you’ll be surrounded by glitzy boutiques, stunning yoga studios and Bali’s hottest nightlife. Seminyak is home to hundreds of world-class restaurants and hip cafes. Don’t miss dining on the famous Eat Street nearby.
Magical Petitenget Beach embodies Balinese spirituality, and Pura Petitenget – an ancient temple – is a significant link in the series of Danh Kahyangan temples along Bali’s west coast between Pura Uluwatu and Pura Tanah Lot. It’s said that in the 16th century a Hindu deity ensured the island’s perimeters would be guarded against evil sea spirits.
Pura Petitenget has twelve shrines and an impressive dragon staircase that leads to an expansive courtyard. Every evening, there are temple ceremonies on the beach and traditional dance displays – a truly mesmerising way to experience the rich culture. Bali is known as the ‘Island of the Gods’ and after visiting some of the enchanting temples you’ll find out why.
The villa manager will be able to organize transport for you to go further afield on Bali. Take a bike ride through the lush green landscape of Tabanan. Discover the famous Jutilwah rice terraces at the foot of Mount Batakuru, dotted with tea plantations. These rice terraces were a recent UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site candidate. Echo Beach is a lovely place for a sundowner and to enjoy their nightly barbecues – it’s just a 9km drive from the villa.
For art lovers, Hotel Tugu Bali is an interesting museum-hotel hybrid full of priceless Indonesian art and antiques. Here, there’s also a fabulous award-winning spa offering traditional Eastern therapies, so it’s an ideal place to spend a leisurely afternoon.
Seminyak beach is a gorgeous place to be with an irresistible vibe from dawn till dusk. It’s popular with surfers across Bali due to the powerful wave breaks. If you’d like to try surfing for yourself, there are numerous surf schools dotted around the island for you to learn from the pros. For sunset, visit one of the many atmospheric beach clubs such as Ku De Ta, Métis and Sarong, all within walking distance of the villa.
